NYC bans AI in schools through 8th grade.

On September 2, Mayor Mamdani and Chancellor Samuels announced that the nation's largest school district — roughly 600,000 students in elementary and middle schools — will prohibit student use of generative AI tools during the school day. Officials framed the policy as a “students first” crackdown on cognitive offloading in early learning. High-school use will remain permitted with guardrails.

The move is the most consequential district-level policy of 2026, and it is already drawing comparison districts — Boulder Valley banned ChatGPT earlier this year, and mayors elsewhere are watching the rollout closely.

Age-gating just became a template — permissive at high school, restrictive earlier. Expect the next wave of district policies to look more like NYC than like the toolkits of last year.
